I’ve always loved movies. My classmates clowned on me and called me Carlton because they viewed my love of cinema as a “white thing”. However, that never kept me away from my dream of directing films.

Growing up as a black kid in Leimert Park, Los Angeles, I’ve always had a deep fear of the police. When I was thirteen years old, my mother called to tell me that my cousin, Devon, was shot dead by the LAPD. He was the same age as me and had tried to steal a car. The cops unloaded 30 bullets into the vehicle, murdering him. Confused, I asked my mom dozens of questions, trying to understand the officers’ actions. Every question led to the same answer: “Son, they didn’t have to shoot him. He was unarmed. The cops don’t take precaution with black folks.”

I’ve often wondered: Why do those who govern think they’re god? This question and all others related to racism, violence and toxic masculinity led me to the creation my film brand, ALT-Horror. With ALT-Horror films, I take contemporary stories and use the camera to meld them into farce and satire. Although my stories are extreme and highly exploitive, is any of it beyond reality in America today?

The creation of the short film, “Chickens”, examines the tragic reality black people still face: the fear of being wrongfully murdered by the police. As with all my films, the intention is to open up a dialogue about the subject matter. Thank you for coming on this ride and seeing things through my eyes.
